So I'm sure that most of you have heard about Game Dev Tycoon or played it at least once. If not, go check it out after you read this review!
Game Dev Tycoon is a game about owning and managing a game company. You start off when gaming was only just getting slightly popular, and you can make only a limited amount of games then. I usually start making small games, experimenting around what games are popular. Around this point the Gameling and the GNES (parodies of the Gameboy and the SNES) come out, but you have to buy licenses to make games for these systems. It usually pays off to buy a liscence for either of these.
A huge factor in the game is research, and in the later stages of the game, this will really affect your time, because you will be trying to train your employees, research, and make money all at the same time! But more on that later.
One of the biggest rushes in this game is when, after 2, 3, sometimes even 4 or 5 years of hard work, you get a hit game. You release a game, wait for the reviews, and then when you see that you get 9.5, 10, 10, and 9.5, you know you have a hit! You will see the sales for that game rushing up and eventually you will get 1 million, 2 million, even 3 4 or 5 million dollars for that game! That's when you go on to the next stage of the game.
The next stage is where I usually go bankrupt. At this point you have to juggle between employees, learning new skills for making games, research for new things for your engine, and keeping your game development process at a high, making new games as soon as possible. I never do get past this part. But when I am playing in this mode, I usually just try to not go bankrupt, and sometimes I get one or two hit games. In my opinion, this is where the game gets really hard.
Overall, I would give Game Dev Tycoon a 9.5 out of 10.
Game Dev Tycoon also has plenty of other features! Such as targeting the age group that your game is made for, advertising your game to get more hype for your game, and even setting up booths at conventions such as G3! (E3 parody). They're also always updating, and there are plenty of new ways to get famous in Game Dev!
